Maruti Suzuki is all set to roll out the S-Cross lifestyle crossover in India in the latter half of July 2015. Incidentally, the S-Cross has been on sale in the European market for close to two years now and on numerous occasions automotive scribes from various publications in India have questioned the company as to why they haven’t brought it here. Looks like, Maruti Suzuki finally decided to answer that query.
The S-Cross is more than just a looker – it comes fitted with all-wheel-drive on the international spec versions, however in India and owing to costs, it does remain to be seen if Maruti Suzuki can bring in the top spec version. Keeping in mind what is currently on offer in terms of the Hyundai i20 Active, Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross and Volkswagen Cross Polo, which all happen to be only front wheel drive versions, it is highly likely that MSIL would do the same, but on a personal note I am keeping my fingers crossed for the AWD version.
As far as engine options are concerned, MSIL is known to play with their portfolio and share as many parts as possible so it wouldn’t be a big surprise if the company decides to go with the same engines currently found under the hood of the Ciaz sedan, namely the 1.4 litre petrol and the 1.3 DDiS diesel.
Crossovers in India have been a niche product, however Hyundai has done well with the i20 Active and when the country’s largest car manufacturer decides to jump on the band wagon, you know it’s being done with some major plans in mind.
While nothing has been revealed about the S-Cross officially, it was displayed at the 2014 Auto Expo and since then it has been a wait and watch game which has finally come to an end. As far as pricing is concerned, we expect MSIL to price the S-Cross rather aggressively as has been their strategy with all their product offerings lately.
