There were stories doing the rounds about Mahindra boosting the power on the Scorpio to 140 bhp. After all the same 2.2 litre mHawk engine delivers that power in the larger XUV5OO and looking at the way the market is shaping up, it definitely made sense to introduce a similar tuned engine in the Scorpio. Those dreams have been answered as Mahindra as gone ahead and done just that!

What Mahindra has to say about the new Scorpio

Speaking on the launch, Rajan Wadhera, President – Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, “The Scorpio has pushed the boundaries for Mahindra and created new benchmarks for others ever since its launch in 2002. To see the Scorpio become the pride of over 6 lakh customers is a matter of pride. Today as we launch the New All Powerful Scorpio, we have further enhanced its on road presence while retaining its core DNA of power, thrill and adventure. I firmly believe that the consumers will find the New All Powerful Scorpio a perfect companion for their thrilling and adventurous journeys.”

What the new Scorpio offers

New Mahindra Scorpio with 140 bhp mHawk engine

The big story is obviously the engine that powers the new Scorpio. The 2.2 liltre mHawk engine has been tuned to deliver 140 bhp of power and 320 Nm of maximum torque. Judging by how the Scorpio was a pleasure to drive even with the 120 bhp engine, this boost in power is going to be a welcome move by Scorpio enthusiasts across India. Add to that, Mahindra is offering the new Scorpio with a new easy shift 6 speed transmission as well and the NVH package has also been tweaked in order to ensure a quieter cabin. The four wheel drive variants get a shift-on-the-fly system which is similar to the one on its predecessor.

Tweaks to the design include a new front grille with chrome inserts, ORVMs with integrated turn indicators, LED tail lamps, a redesigned footstep and rear bumper, a new skid plate and new look air extractors. The new Scorpio also rides on nice large wheels fitted to a new look alloy design. The cabin remains largely the same however slight enhancements have been made to give it a more upmarket feel. These touches include the faux leather seats and steering wheel wrap, bigger cubby holes and a new mobile phone holder slot.

The new Scorpio also comes packed with a host of advanced features such as a reverse parking camera, one touch lane change indicator, GPS navigation in 10 languages, steering mounted audio and cruise controls, a 6 inch touchscreen infotainment system, tyre-tronics, rain and light sensors and a voice assist system.

The new Scorpio is built on the same tried and tested chassis that we’ve seen on the older generation version. The robust chassis is said to give the Scorpio the structural rigidity required for offroading and it also plays a role in upping the safety game. On that note, the Scorpio also offers dual airbags and ABS.

Incidentally, the 140 bhp Scorpio will only be offered in the S7 and S11 trims. Mahindra will continue to offer the 120 bhp version on the S3, S5 and S7 (one variant), while the rural market will be catered to with the S3 variant powered by the 75 bhp DI motor that is seen on other Mahindra jeeps. The base variant pricing of the Scorpio starts at INR 9.97 lakh, however the pricing for the top of the line variants hasn’t been revealed just yet.
